2017 Mercedes G-Class G350d Professional Navigation and Reversing Camera by Automotive Integration

The Mercedes G-Class G350d Professional is designed to be rugged and travel over rough terrain. It is seen as the new kid on the block to replace the iconic Land Rover Defender that ceased production recently.   The cabin creature comforts are purely aimed at brutal off road functionality rather than urban luxury which is why the OEM radio seems a little lacking in features. However, here at Automotive Integration, we understand it's important to also know where you're going. This is why we  worked with a local Mercedes dealer to develop an aftermarket solution to add integrated navigation, USB, Bluetooth phone with audio streaming and reversing camera to the G-Class.

The Clarion NZ502A headunit features a high resolution screen, built-in NAVTEQ Mapping and Bluetooth phone and audio streaming, and USB connectivity. The fold-out display retracts neatly into the dashboard when not needed, and provides an easy to use touch screen interface when required.

The display with  the screen closed gives you station read out and track names with scan and volume control.

The reverse camera is a 170° wide angle Sony lens mounted just below the door. It gives you vision of both tow hooks bordering the camera image as well as the towbar when fitted. The parking lines are set to line up with the road and give a visual indication of distance. The camera is water resistant and designed to be out  in the elements.

Mercedes Viano rear seat entertainment system from Automotive Integration.

With production of the R Class people mover concluding, the demand for a replacement has seen the Viano become the new option. While looking like a van on the outside, that is where the similarities finish. The interior is pure luxury with leather and quality trims. This particular vehicle had multiple sunroofs meaning that the usual front and rear screen approach would not work. The solution was to fit two Alpine 10.2 inch roof monitors side by side to allow multiple viewing options . The screens were mounted to two heavy duty aluminium brackets fitted behind the roof liner to ensure the passengers' safety. Wireless headsets with dual channels means that the passengers could choose which screen to hear as well as the vehicle's radio having the ability to play either screen's audio. A challenging project with a great result.
